Both methods share the same foundations but one is practiced with specialized equipment while the other is practiced on a mat and a stool.

GYROTONIC® METHOD

Sophisticated adjustments are made by your trainer to fit your height, the length of your arms and legs as well as the range of your body’s motions to fit your individual physical capabilities.

Gyrokinesis® Method

This method invites you to work gently on your whole body. Your joints and muscles are elicited through various sets of rhythmic and undulating movements.

The postures are not kept for a long time – instead they flow gently and harmoniously from one to another through breathing. Muscles and joints unwind, stretch and strengthen. Flow and breathing are at the center of this method which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. You come out of each session with a strong sense of quietude, well-being and mental clarity.

GYROKINESIS® method is practiced on a mat and stool in group sessions. It involves various movement sequences (seated, on your knees, lying down and standing).

JULIU HORVATH

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® was created by Juliu Horvath.
Originally from Romania, Juliu Horvath was born in Hungary in 1942. He has always been passionate about movement. As a young man, he excelled in swimming, gymnastics and rowing. At the age of 19 he started studying dance; two years later, he became the lead dancer for the National Romanian Ballet Company.
He managed to escape Romania over the course of an Italian tour in 1970 and lived in a refugee camp for six months. He then sought political asylum in the United States and moved to New York.

Once he landed in New York City, Juliu did everything he could to survive, from painting houses to dancing in Central Park.

In the 1970’s, he danced with the New York City Opera and was a guest artist at Radio City Music Hall where he became much sought-out. He participated in special tours with various international stars among whom Margot Fonteyn, Jacques d’Ambroise, or Melissa Hayden. Eventually, he obtained a contract as principal dancer for the Houston Ballet.

As his career was cut short by an achilles tendon rupture, Juliu went back to New York City and started practicing yoga. In 1977, he left for Saint Thomas (Virgin Islands) and built a house in the mountains where he could study and practice yoga and meditation intensely. It is then that he started developing an elaborate system he called “yoga for dancers”.

Six years later, he went back to N.Y.C and started teaching this new movement method to professional dancers.

With the success of his method and the spread of “yoga for dancers”, Juliu Horvath decided to make his method available to a wider audience, with no restriction of age or physical condition. GYROKYNESIS® was born.

Over the course of the following years, Juliu continued to refine the method and developed GYROTONIC ®, a method which is practiced with the help of equipment that he created and built himself.
